This is something a little different.

Shot on location at Tartu Prison and partly inspired by the fact that since its opening in November 2001, at least four intimate relationships have developed between guards and prisoners.
Despite the external framework of prison cells and concrete walls, this story revolves around relationships, genuine feelings and the question of taking responsibility for your own freedom.
WHO IS THE REAL PRISONER HERE? The one who is locked in his cell or the guard who, despite all his possibilities to shape his own destiny, constantly hesitates to make a necessary decision?

Although we were never sure we would show it, (in celebration of Estonian [Re] Independence) we’ve caved into pressure and decided to show the quintessential Estonian cult-classic b-grade film, ‘Malev’!

‘Malev’ – or ‘Men at Arms’ - is a historical comedy based on 13th century Estonia and Livonia filled full of historical references and innuendo.
The year is 1208.
The first Eastward enlargement of Europe is under way.
Brutal forces of the Teutonic Order are steadily marching on. In their path live a simple and peaceful people, whose main pastimes include cultivating the earth, singing and, if possible, doing both at the same time. They are the Estonians.
Ignorant in the ways of war, they find an unlikely leader in a young boy with Christian upbringing, Uru (Sepp).
As the first educated Estonian and a naive but proud idealist, Uru finds himself thrust into the middle of a madcap adventure trying to provoke Estonians into taking control of their destiny, only to find that the future of Estonia ultimately depends on him.
In their fight for freedom, the Estonians encounter numerous obstacles, including the Germans, French, Russians and, worst of all, the Latvians.
Will they succeed in defeating their enemies or will they experience a cultural awakening?
Are Estonians ready for freedom?
What really happened in the greatest Estonian battle of all time?
What the hell is a ‘majuscule’???
Malev gives you all the answers!

Whether you have seen it already, a half-dozen times like most of us, or not at all, come have a laugh anyway and see what all the fuss was about when it became the highest grossing Estonian film ever made. If you liked ‘Braveheart’ and Monty Python, you’ll love ‘Malev’!

January 1, 2012 marked the launch of the new Internet news portal “Estonian World Review” (EWR). It is the first such Estonian news portal to report activities of Estonians living in a number of different countries, on different continents.

The new portal was created in cooperation with several Estonian language media outlets located outside of Estonia, which report in Australia, Canada, Germany, Russia, Sweden, and the United States.

The Canadian Estonian newspaper “Estonian Life”, which until recently published its articles on www.eesti.ca (founded in 2001 when two Canadian Estonian newspapers merged), will continue its collaboration with the new portal EWR.

The objective of “Estonian World Review” is to solidify the cooperation between Estonian language media operating outside of Estonia and to offer varied information regarding Estonian activity around the world in Estonian, English and other languages.

The Estonian World Review Editor-in-Chief is the long-time Editor at www.eesti.ca, Mr. Vaado Sarapuu.

Esto Pub Night is an institution here in Adelaide and we would like to make a last minute appeal to support our first EPN for 2012! Everybody who reads any type of Australian Estonian media publications would be aware of very simple rudimentary journalistic style but the important experience is to enjoy the evening and not feel pressured to drop in and feel welcomed with-out any pressure.

Esto Pub Night 21 is making a return on Friday February the 10th 2012. It has been decided to go back to the grass roots of what Esto Pub Nights were originally all about. No high powered politics, no advertising in major national or international Estonian newspapers. Remember this is an opportunity to get together with friendly local Estonians after work on a Friday night, to support our local hall, to meet new people, enjoy a fantastic inexpensive meal and sample our variety of Estonian and local beers, wines and spirits, which is unmatched in the Southern Hemisphere.

We are all excited about Esto Pub Night entering it’s fifth year in ‘Twenty-Twelve’, I’m sure it is going to be another fascinating year. We are looking forward to several evenings throughout the year. Look at our involvement in the Summer Olympics, another Estonian Eurovision campaign (Estovision), OktooberEST, our Esto-Curry night and of course the build up to Eesti Paevad and many more of our regular evenings. They are all a great chance to get together at our fabulous venue here in North Adelaide.

Well many are amazed that EPN is still going in 2012! Well after our slow beginning back in August of 2008 it is a pleasure that we are still here. Certainly the major credit must go to Thomas Sarapuu and his team who have listened to you the public and made this an evening that we all enjoy. The main theme is that it is not a burden to drop in even for a few minutes and see what it is all about!

It is EPN’s 21st birthday, yes Esto Pub Night is XXI! This is going to be our first summer evening and the Ukuleles have agreed to return to help us celebrate. This time they will be in the main hall and will play all those amazing hits. My personal favorite last year was Flowers on the Wall, by the Statler Brothers a well known to most from the Pulp Fiction sound tract. Their entire repertoire is well known to all and it is a great chance for a fantastic evenings celebration and entertainment.

Esto Pub Night has evolved since its humble beginnings and has had numerous fabulous International head chefs. Other Australian cities have enjoyed local Australian Estonian cuisine from Australian Estonian våålis eestlassed. They may believe in their abilities but we here in Adelaide have enjoyed the experience at Esto Pub Night of Amarjit Sidhu, my Mother in Law with her spicy curry evenings, Kristina Lupp during the Adelaide Festival Era, Chef Greggory in the recent glory days and now we will be treated to a new phenomena! There has been a moderate amount of competition in the background Thomas Sarapuu has been overwhelmed with enquiries. After numerous submissions from various Baltic Communities the Lithuanian Head Chef Regina has emerged and NYE was a treat! Well done. EPN is another night to enjoy!

If this is your first time, the entire idea of these nights is to drop in for 10 minutes or 2 hours and stay for some food to say hello, support the hall and bump into old or meet new Esto friends… No need to book tables or make formal appointments, it has become a relaxed, friendly evening for everyone. Drop in after work or some people come through on their way home after being out elsewhere. Put Friday February the 10th into your calendar it will certainly be the ultimate Esto Pub Night at ‘Kalev on Jeffcott’ here in North Adelaide.

Priidik is a young boy alone.

Priidik’s dad, a single parent, disapproves of what he thinks is Priidik’s boundless imagination and does his best to prepare Priidik for his first day of school and to grow up a little.

When visiting Priidik’s mothers father (his grandpa), Priidik accidentally finds an old book in his grandpa’s antique shop. One that can magically fix things.

After realising the power the book yields, he decides to use the book to revive a dead butterfly who was killed due to his fathers inattention.

The first day of school arrives and without his dad’s knowing, Priidik wishes to say good-bye to his lost mum and passing childhood with the help of the book.
‘The Day I Grew Up’ is a heart warming story of letting go and is beautifully shot.

‘Uus Maailm’ – (New World) (M) 2011 **CURRENTLY SHOWING IN ESTONIA**

‘New World’ is a thoroughly entertaining documentary shot over 4 years recording the events of the New World Society that took place in Kesklinn, Tallinn.
The story involves a bunch of young idealistic types who decide they want to start an NGO (non-government organisation) so they can turn back the clock a little and make their neck of the woods car free. And hopefully care-free.

By doing so they hope to take control of their part of society, the part usually neglected by politicians and big business, and change the feel and attitude of where they live from a primp-n-proper up-and-coming neighborhood where no one really talks to each other, to one that is a little more loose where everybody knows everyone’s business, but get along.

Or as car free as possible.

After gaining some initial exposure and funding from the government, ‘New World’ was the name given to the area where the story takes place, in a house-come-community drop-in center.

But like all things (business), the community becomes dependent on the governments funding as it seems everyone wants to be a part of the party, but no one wants to pay for the party.

To get the house running requires bottomless energy and a drive (usually reserved for selfish and immature teenagers) to meet the ultimate objective which is set by the stories main character Erko Valk.

Whilst he is the nucleus of the story, it’s the stories of the other people around him that become interesting in the quest to meet Erko’s objectives, as well as the ensuing internal conflicts which occur because of his style of leadership.
