Lőke was formed in 1997 by Erik Holm who approached numerous Australian Estonians with the idea of creating an Estonian music group. Unlike the existing choirs in Sydney, the majority of Lőke members are born in Australia, with either one or both Estonian parents.

“Virmalised - Northern Lights - Estonian Folk Dancers” is Sydney’s premier Estonian Folk Dance Group, that works in concert with the Sydney Estonian Community to provide a contemporary expression of Estonian culture and traditions in the context of multiculturalism in Australia. The foundation for “Virmalised - Northern Lights - Estonian Folk Dancers” was laid in folk dance performances dating back to 1934, with the name “Virmalised - Northern Lights - Estonian Folk Dancers” being adopted by the Group in 1969.
